President Obama has promised that no new offshore drilling leases will be issued unless rigs have new safeguards to prevent a repeat of the explosion that unleashed the massive spill now threatening the entire Gulf coast.
Environmentalists plotting the ebb and flow of the massive oil slick fear it will wreak irreparable damage to the beaches and fisheries of the Gulf in the weeks and months ahead.
But, whether BP succeeds soon in capping the flow. . .regardless of how many tens of millions of fish and shellfish die. . . and how much oil eventually washes ashore in the future, the real and lasting impact has already occurred.
