Watching the D-Day marathon on the Military Channel. Had the opportunity to visit the D-Day Museum in New Orleans in 2004. Considering the debauchery and irreverence that is New Orleans, it makes for a rather strange backdrop for such a somber subject.
While not the most expansive museum, it is one of the most impactful I've ever been to. They have bricks outside with the names of all the US soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice that day. There was a decorated WWII vet in uniform and a wheelchair outside weeping...reminded me of the final scene in Saving Private Ryan where Private Ryan is in the cemetary reflecting at the grave of Tom Hanks' character. I felt profoundly small when all I could was thank him for his service and sacrifice to the country.
