You can get a simulated futures account here and paper trade for a few weeks (I recommend you do it first) before you even think about futures.

Also, if you ever do take the plunge you should pick someone that seldom if ever has data issues and someone that only charges a couple of bucks for round trip trades. Anything over $3 is a ripoff.
