Love this excerpt from the Bank Atlantic story:

Should BankAtlantic Bancorp buy back the debt, it can record the difference between the purchase price and the previous liability as income, categorizing it as extinguished debt.

If all the investment groups accept the deal, BankAtlantic Bancorp could make $228.3 million. That would exceed the $76 million it raised through a shareholder offering in the third quarter of 2009.
