a woodstove puts out more energy than you put in because that analysis includes the thermal energy to light the fire and the heat generated, not the chemical energy of the wood.

The excess energy comes from combusting some of the propane, ethane, methane and butane produced by the process and shows up as a yield loss of 9% in the conversion of plastic to oil.
