In furtherance of this post, a patent does not just protect the engineering method which creates a new function, i.e., live time 3D X Ray/CT imaging, it is the function itself that is protected by the patent. Other manufacturers cannot just find a different way to generate live time 3D images. Imaging3 found a way to do it and got a patent on the function. Any device that generates live time X Ray or CT 3D images, no matter how it does so, would infringe Imaging3's patent.
