Wrong. Any compensation to the CEO must be approved via vote by the board of directors who are signficiant shareholders themselves.

I guess it's possible that John will grow horns, "vote" himself the entire company and give the board of directors a kickback, but this lunatic conspiracy theory likely wouldn't occur for years, probably aroudn the same pigs evolve and grow wings.

In the mean time, this thread began with why are we so excited about John giving back 31 million shares, thus reducing the share count by 38%? Because that increases future earnings per share by around 50% and will therefore increase future valuation in the market by around 50%. It's a good reason to be excited.
