Transmeta quits chip business, stock falls
Wed Jan 5, 2005 01:16 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Shares of Transmeta Corp. fell 25 percent on Wednesday as the once high-flying Silicon Valley start-up said it would stop selling computer chips to focus on licensing intellectual property.

The move ends Transmeta's five-year run as a longshot competitor to Intel Corp. in the business of making computer microprocessors.....

Early Wednesday afternoon, Transmeta stock fell 37 cents, or 25 percent, to $1.09 on Nasdaq.

The new business model will center on licensing the low-power technology that the company has accumulated over the years, the company said in a statement.
