GOM spill – from the long piece on the news I heard this a.m., the recently calculated rate of 70k barrels per day has an error margin of +/- 20%, but two other scientists using different methodologies came up with roughly the same amounts. Bottom line is that the flow rate could easily be a factor of 5 to 10 times greater than the 5k barrels per day stated. The scientists also said that if BP released more of their information, they could refine their calculations. Apparently BP is relying on Coast Guard and NOAA estimates of oil found on the sea surface for their estimates of the 5k barrels per day. BP also says that while the riser is some 20 inches, the actual pipe inside with oil is only 9 inches. The new estimates also mentioned that the mixture appears from the video to be a mixture of gas and oil, the actual video started with an apparent gas bubble coming out, but by the end of the video appeared to be mostly oil, so that complicates the calcs, but that the amounts are still magnitudes greater than the first given estimates. Very scary indeed.
