MMoy, if your friend desires a 3lbs laptop with media encoding prowess, he's going to have to look for the best balance. Either he will have to sacrifice weight for performance, or performance for weight, but he can't have both.

There are choices with good tradeoffs between the two, but they tend to be pricey. Check out this one from Fujitsu, for example:

It goes up to 1.7GHz and weighs only 3.6lbs without the optical drive, but you'll have to be willing to shell out about $500 more than a standard thin and light laptop.

There's also this one, which manages to fit an optical drive and a 7 hour battery into a device weighing 3.3lbs. Of course, the processor only runs at 1.1GHz.
