Dealing with waste and producing energy is vital, even to a world in a deep recession. If oil drop below $50/barrel, then we just break those HC chains a little shorter (thanks to the catalyst, and it's something no competitor can do), produce 95% natural gas, and generate electricity from it. Over here in Europe, you can sell it to the grid for $0.16/kWh, which is already double the barrel prices for the same mass of plastic.
