correction.. try to do that simple method you describe without a data plan or without EDGE/3G network and see if that would work for you?? I doubt it, a lot of the smartphones has to connect to a database to pull up the information and in order to do that u need some type of data connection and when u are in a rural area where 3G, EDGE, 4G isnt covered you are screwed and left with dialing 411.

Now, GOIG (GO800) all you need is txt msg servicing and viola your good to go. No need for supplement data package, or network for that matter as long as u have cell reception.
