How much did the plaintiffs receive from the Exxon Mobil disaster?
The damage assessment, and the initial award was for $5B. This is what its been reduce to and how long they tied up in the courts. http://www.adn.com/2008/07/15/465332/exxon-maintains-it-doesnt-owe.html

This represents 32000 people who will receive approx $15,645.
Exxon Mobil reported a profit of $38B a few years ago, and again the next following year. More than any company in the history of the world. To put this a little in perspective, the award will be less than the compensation package its Ceo will receive over the same time period since the so called accident occurred. Its labeled an accident. An accident by its very nature is something that could not be avoided, something unforeseen. Like the Titanic, this to could have been avoided. It didn't have to happen!.

We'll have to wait an see how BP handles this catastrophe?. If they are better than EM?, and what crucial role the Fed will play in all this?. Its hard to imagine the allowance of any new future oil rigs going up and drilling in the Gulf after this, but even this will not deter other oil companies pushing so they can make billions more. Nothing is gonna stop the increase of what we be paying at the pumps in the future. The market after all needs direction again, and oil is money, and its need to support their next big thing,,,,,,,,,,,,Their Green Scheme.

This is how the high court works, and how justice is served up when it comes to their support of publicly traded corporations, the reasons why there is so much abuse. Its not surprising. Imo it largely depends on the influence Washington peddles to the Supreme Court in its decision process. They wield alot of power, and use it to support the administration they are in support of, in particular those who get nominated by the administration in power.

A different era, but
What did the Supreme Court do to enforce the decision it reached when Andrew Jackson was president when it sided with the Cherokee Nation that they could remain on their land which encompassed several southern States?. Not then nor even after his death did they ever do anything to enforce their decision, and he did it with an army and the point of a gun. Not one damn thing, as he said they would. In fact he should have been arrested and then impeached. We know this today as the Trail Of Tears.
