I saw an article concerning the operation of the MM's. most of the shorts that you see are a standard part of their operation during their operating day that are not necessarily investors running the stock down. They MUST provide their calling banks with shares when requested whether or not they have them or the bank will go elsewhere and they loose business. This leads to short term shorting that is usually quickly covered. I'll try to find the article but it was quite a large document.
