Jim Cramer’s Top Homeland Security Stocks for 2010: ASEI, OSIS, FLIR, COGT, ID
Posted on Jan 08, 2010 in Uncategorized - Leave a comment
Jim Cramer continued his “Big 10? investment themes of 2010 by highlighting counter-terrorism, a sector that everyone is watching following the Christmas Day attempted bombing of Northwest Flight 253. He recommended American Science & Engineering Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) and OSI Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS), two companies that make mobile X-ray systems. American Science & Engineering is a pure play on X-ray machines, including mobile X-ray equipped vans that scan for bombs, drugs and weapons. The company’s products are proprietary, they have a huge backlog of business, new contracts are rolling in, and the US government has awarded the firm a number of sizable deals. Cramer said ASEI, which is up 20% since it was last recommended on Oct. 12, has lots of room to grow. OSI systems has a similar X-ray technology to ASEI that checks for explosives that are hidden under clothing. Cramer said OSI is a small speculative play with a market cap under $500 million. However, Cramer loves the fundamentals and the company is booking tons of new orders. Cramer also gave the thumbs-up to FLIR Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:FLIR), which is up 15% since it was mentioned on Oct. 15. FLIR makes infrared cameras and night-vision systems to detect threats that aren’t visible to the naked eye, track and locate terrorists and aid soldiers in nighttime operations. Also, the company’s technology helps to protect petrochemical and nuclear facilities, in addition to US bases in Afghanistan. He also likes Cogent Inc. (NASDAQ:COGT) for its fingerprint recognition technology and L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. (NYSE:ID) for its eye and facial recognition technology. “Stick with counter-terrorism winners like ASEI, OSIS, FLIR, COGT and ID, Cramer said. “But, remember, this is a long-term theme, and all of these stocks look even better on a pullback.” Join the fastest growing community of small cap investors at Stockhideout.com
