Profit... (Sunday Series 3)

In 586BC Nebuchadnezzar, king of Chaldea, seized Jerusalem and returned home with the gold & silver of that great city. Daniel, a young boy at that time, was also removed & placed in the king’s service. Many years later Nebuchadnezzar’s son, Belshazzar, ordered his servants to fetch the gold & silver vessels so the royal party could drink from them. The order was carried out & the family did drink while praising the gods of gold, silver, iron ,wood, and stone.
In that same hour a man’s hand appeared & wrote on the plaster wall of the king’s palace. The party was over. Belshazzar was troubled but could not find anyone in all of Babylon to interpret the words. His queen suggested Daniel whom his father had deemed chief of soothsayers.

Daniel, now in his 80's, interpreted the words: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN..

Belshazzar, because you have not humbled your heart as your father did & because you have drunk from vessels of the Lord’s house while praising idols, the Lord who holds your breath in his hand has ordered these words to be written...
MENE : God has numbered your kingdom & finished it.
MENE : God has numbered your kingdom & finished it.
TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balance & found wanting.
UPHARSIN : Your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

That night Belshazzar was slain & Darius, king of the Medes took over Chaldea.
