Clean Power Unveils Heat Recovery System for Landfill Gas Applications

CESAR technology provides 8% energy efficiency gains for waste-to-energy operators

Press Release Source: Clean Power Technologies Inc. On Wednesday April 21, 2010, 9:30 am EDT

NEWHAVEN, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - 04/21/10) - Clean Power Technologies Inc. (OTC.BB:CPWE - News) (Frankfurt:C1L - News) ("Clean Power" or the "Company"), a developer of unique systems to reduce emissions and fuel usage by harnessing wasted exhaust energy, is pleased to announce that it has formally launched its heat recovery based CESAR technology for its first landfill application. An unveiling ceremony took place on April 13th 2010 at the Company's Headquarters in Newhaven, on England's Sussex Coast.

Clean Power Technologies has developed a steam hybrid system based on its proprietary Clean Energy Separation And Recovery ('CESAR') technology. CESAR is able to recover otherwise wasted heat from combustion engine exhaust and cooling systems which is then utilised to generate high-pressure superheated steam. The energy within the steam is converted to rotational power by expansion through a vapour engine to drive auxiliary equipment or to supplement a vehicle's main power source.

The Ceremony was attended by more than 70 guests, ranging from the Company's loyal shareholders to the Mayor of Newhaven and it included a Representative of CPT first customer, Renewable Power Systems. Attendees were given a tour of Clean Power's 10,000 sq.ft. R&D facility, during which they were updated on the Company's truck and refrigerated trailer programme, before being shown the new landfill gas unit prior to its trial installation on a 500 kW generator set in Oxfordshire, UK. These field trial results will lead to the final design of purpose-built engines for use across the broader landfill sector where demand is high for what is, essentially, cost free energy.

This trial programme follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, in September 2009, with gas-to-energy developer Renewable Power Systems ("RPS"), based on laboratory tests in July 2009 that simulated landfill conditions and proved the concept for the landfill gas application. This latest application for the CESAR system was announced by the Company's President and CEO, Mr. Abdul Mitha. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mr. Mitha said: "CESAR is a unique technology that improves energy efficiency in both stationary and motive power systems by applying smart heat recovery techniques. In a world that is developing evermore complicated ways to enhance fuel economy and improve the environment, Clean Power has found an answer that is sound, simple, practical and cost effective. More than one third of fuel energy from an internal combustion engine is wasted in the form of exhaust heat. By capturing it, using it to create super heated steam and applying that steam either in the original engine or a secondary generator, we have proved, in our test facility that our CESAR system can provide an additional 8% of energy ... free of charge.

"In the engineering world, 8% is a massive uplift. For instance, through our discussion with a major truck and engine, we were told that despite budgets of hundreds of millions of pounds they had difficulty squeezing 1/4 of 1% additional energy from current engines. This has prompted preliminary meetings to explore collaborative relationship for the future development for the integration of the CESAR technology in trucks. Our ongoing energy efficiency results, in both the truck and landfill development programmes, continue to attract strong interest from Original Equipment manufacturers, the aftermarket sector and operators alike. Indeed, Clean Power have already received enquiries from a number of landfill operators in Canada, the United States, India and China.

In the USA and Canada alone, the market potential for Clean Power's landfill system is over 2300 units, giving the Company a combined market potential in the U.K. and the U.S.A. of over Pounds Sterling 360 million (US$ 500 million).

Having outlined the many uncharted engineering challenges faced by the Company, and praised the professionalism with which the Clean Power team had addressed them, Mr Mitha handed over to Mike Burns, Chief Technology Officer, who added: "This is a world first; never before has the waste exhaust from a landfill gas spark ignition engine been used to generate additional electricity for commercial sale to the national grid. The CESAR system will increase the power from such systems, indeed from any combustion-engined power generation set, by 8%. This potentially translates to an additional 68 megawatts per year, or Pounds Sterling 66 million in additional revenue, just from UK landfill sites, not to mention the environmental benefits of capturing energy from exhaust gases that are normally wasted to atmosphere."

The visit concluded with an explanation by Marco Cuccinota, Control Systems Manager, of the instrumentation, computer systems and software designed in-house by Clean Power to monitor the performance of the landfill installation at Finmere.
