joshua there are a couple reasons for that.

1st reason:

Many times when the stock takes off, the volume increases and there is a somewhat endless pool of buyers the seller gets caught up in the ease at which they can issue and sell stock.

In other words, if the buyers are still buying why would they stop selling?

2nd reason:
