I'm an oldtimer, shot tons of .45 ACP, 45 LC and .45 Auto Rim. I can accept that the 9MM has been in use in Europe and around the world for more than my lifetime, and is a useful round. I've even owned and reloaded 9MM, no problem. I still like the .45 LC best. Light loads are accurate, recoil is very mild (my ex's favorite round) and I'm paper rather than fur, so I can load up or down as I please. However . . .
When the .40 caliber came out I couldn't see any real point in it. Shoot the 9MM if you wanted a really large number of shots before shoving in a fresh clip (I'd love an SR9 Ruger) or stick with the old .45 for fun and for self defense.
We got the 10MM, and it was slowly catching on. Then came the .40 S & W. Here's the story on that one.
