I'm getting psyched for kickoff at noon... Michigan on ABC and Penn State on ESPN in this area! Should be interesting as I have already dreamt that Michigan lost... agh... hoping to be pleasantly surprised by the end of the game. smile

Michigan, Washington Set Game

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan defensive end Larry Stevens has waited all summer for Saturday's rematch with Washington.

Stevens, from Tacoma, Wash., endured merciless ribbing back home after the Huskies rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Wolverines 23-18 last season. Washington scored two touchdowns off a blocked field goal and interception return in the dramatic comeback.

No. 13 Michigan hopes to avoid the same outcome when No. 11 Washington visits Michigan Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

``It bothered me and hurt me the way we lost to them last year because I grew up with a lot of those guys,'' Stevens said. ``I didn't leave that state to lose to them. It's a little more personal for me.''

Coaches and players from both schools are excited about the marquee game.

``You know that you're playing in a football game that everyone in the nation who loves college football is going to be watching,'' Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said. ``So I like it.''

Penn. State QB: Opening Win 'Vital'
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 5:18 p.m. ET

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Two years ago it was Southern California in the Kickoff Classic. Last year it was Miami, which went on to win the national championship.

Penn State lost its season opener in each of the last two years -- only the second time that has happened in Joe Paterno's 37 years as head coach.

This year there is new confidence among the Nittany Lions, who are talking about conference titles and the Bowl Championship Series again. That's why quarterback Zack Mills says Penn State must take care of business Saturday against Central Florida.

``I think it's vital,'' Mills said. ``Not that this game's going to make or break our season, but for our confidence, for the season to go where we want it to go, we pretty much have to win this game.''

Of course, such talk puts too much emphasis on one game for Paterno, who would rather his team simply improve from game to game.

``Any time you can start with a win, it is good. This is not the make-or-break game of the season for us,'' Paterno said. ``The biggest thing that I want to get out of the game is a bunch of kids that play a little bit smarter than we did, maybe, early in the year last year.''
