But there is more than one school of thought on that now days. Sports medicine Orthopedists will tell you throwing the curve ball is really less stressful on the shoulder and even the elbow than the fast ball.

You are probably right. My memory is of something that happened many years ago. It's possible the coach just said don't throw sliders.

A lot of this has come out with the proliferation of women's fastpitch.

I'm glad you mentioned woman's fast pitch. I find it fascinating that these gals can propel the ball sooooo fast while throwing underarm. I've heard that it's not natural for humans to throw strictly overarm because of bone and joint structure. I suppose this is why more and more pros are throwing sidearm.
