The first 4G phone from Sprint will be powered by Sequans Communications’ chipset. The phone will be unveiled at CTIA Wireless 2010 in Las Vegas on March 23 during a Sprint event.
It’s the WiMAX phone that will be available for use in Sprint’s 27 WiMAX markets along with a 3G connection for use anywhere in the U.S. Sequans Communications is a chip maker that’s built WiMAX and LTE chipsets, along with a combined chip that could potentially work on both networks.
It’s the device that Sprint expects to make WiMAX mainstream. By providing faster speeds more mobile and be able to make calls, the HTC Supersonic might be able to rival the iPhone. The hold up being that WiMAX is in only 27 markets. Clearwire, the builder of the network, plans on having WiMAX in 80 markets by the end of 2010, including New York, San Francisco, Houston and Boston.
