They are all starting to limit you in various ways. Rogers recently farmed off their Newsgroups to Giganews in the US. The contract between them is that each user gets a maximum of 2 channels of 256Kbps/channel. The downside is pathetic speed. The upside is - the retention is massive. It runs 247 filling my harddrives.
Bell offers no newsgroups - so with them, I was paying $10US/mth for Easynews - 10-15GB/mth (not as good retention; no idea of the speed but very fast and no channel count restrictions).
DSLReports.COM is a pretty good site for all this info. One guy complained of being banned from Rogers - I IM'd him and he said on his 3 machines he was pushing north of 200GB/mth. He brought it down to 100GB after being warned and was booted. That would be less of a problem since the speed caps came in - but I wonder what the break is - so I trying to D/L 247 before I axe Bell.
Anyways, that isn't the point of this post. What is a point, is that Rogers offers "3" and "5" Mbps speeds - but they offer the same "low" speed caps for the newsgroups across both accounts. (Akin to a Porsche v. a Chevy in a city with a maximum of 60Km/h and and never drive the highways out of town).
What I find funny -- their decision to contract out to Giganews. They could have taken a "we don't support them" stance as with Bell. Most people never heard of them; don't access them - and yet Rogers made a point to keep them.
