(I have a sneaking suspicion that the folks mentioned on this site will be willing to talk to you about the material used in this project next month. Why? I don't think they will tell you, either._
I think it is valuable because of this. A new industrial focus on space travel (not to mention increased efficiencies in aviation and automobiles) now that the shuttle program is being closed makes lightweight, heat-resistant materials like Thresher's quite desirable.
