Actually, smoking is not a sin. People use the scripture that talks about the body being the temple of the Holy Ghost, but Christ said that what goes into a man does not defile him, but what comes out of a man (meaning if his speech or actions are ungodly).
But you are right, we all fall short of God's glory. No one is sin-free. The difference between the children of God and the ungodly is that His children will recognize sin as sin, be sorrowful for committing the act and try to change. I am so sorrowful when I sin and I try to change to serve God better and apologize for my sinful actions.
These days, people want to change God to suit their needs, like the openly gay bishop. They are not sorrowful for their wicked ways. They think that because society is changing, that God is changing with it. Boy is that a bad way of thinking. There is a scripture in Malachi 3 that says God doesn't change His ways.

5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.
6 For I am the LORD, I CHANGE not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
7 Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

The whole point of belonging to any religion is to try to conform your lifestyle to what it says to do, not try to make up your own rules or pick and choose what you like or don't like about it. It's 100% or nothing with God.
