The simple answer in college football is an 8 team single elimination playoff. Only 7 games needed is all. Base the final 8 on the rating system they have now. Just so the bowls are still part of it all, name the 7 bowls that will be part of the playoff. Each playoff game is thus a bowl. Then, rotate them each year so each bowl game gets a chance at the semi-finals and championship game.

So in a nutshell, have an 8 team playoff, with each game being named a bowl.

Pollsters are happy, playoff supporters are happy and bowl supporters are happy.
