Perhaps the reason they could keep more of what they made was because it was only through unions they were able to negotiate that "more of what they made"

If one is interested in a society without education look no further than Haiti, Zimbabwe, or any third world Nation. However, for contrast it may be helpful to also look at Denmark and Sweden.
