Dear fellow-longs and long-haul enthusiasts in SunnComm,

I am still rubbing my eyes and trying to understand the lukewarm – if not chilly or freezing – response to today’s press release putting the official seal on the total compatibility between Microsoft’s technology and the technology of SunnComm.

Let’s just think of this. If I go on to the Microsoft website, the by now rock-solid link with SunnComm and MM5 is right there, staring me in the face – full recognition that copy protection by master of music ceremonies MM5 works seamlessly and effortlessly with what Microsoft has. It starts here:

Toolkit Is Adopted by MPO, World's Largest Independent CD Manufacturer; Major Record Labels Universal Music Group and EMI Recorded Music; And SunnComm, a Leader in Digital Content Security

But try, try and try to get a response to a query on Macrovision on that same website, and I draw a total blank. There’s zero there!

Shouldn’t we ask ourselves what this means? If it was so easy and casual to win this designation and unconditional approval, why hasn’t the all-powerful gorilla or Goliath portrayed by the kiddos and kinkos of this world achieved it? Where’s the tripwire? Wouldn’t it be a flower in their buttonhole, an immensely valuable official endorsement attesting their bravura “300” skills?

Microsoft is Microsoft – the most successful performer in the software and internet revolution. Doesn’t it occur to anyone here that this PR, just as it stands, might actually be the deal-maker for us (not to say sotto voce, in a gentle whisper, the deal-breaker for Macrovision) in the run-up to a definitive no-limits partnership with majors like EMI, Universal, Warner?

Didn’t those majors maybe long for just this kind of authentication and official guarantee by Microsoft that SunComm has what it takes to ensure effective on- the-fly copy protection and management?

I guess they do – I guess this PR has knocked their socks off, and thrown any lingering doubts right out of the window and into the night.

I think they now have one of the strongest motivations possible for signing along the line if they haven’t done so already!
