TG, what would be the purpose of having a PM function if it wasn't really a private function?

As between two people, a conversation is only private if both sides agree to keep it that way. If you can't handle transparency, then be careful what you say.

Ahhhh, excuse me, if you don't care to privately have a conversation / message, then post it on a public board, otherwise I value my private messages to stay just that, private.
Other posters can trust that I will not violate sensitive material and likewise I to them.
Don't confuse being transparent to posting someones PM's on a public board. If you have a problem with another posters "transparency" then put them on ignore.

If someone sends me a threat, or an offer to break the law, or a racist joke, I may want to let the community know.

No. Let Admin know on the threats and offers per: PM function and again, put them on ignore.

Put another way, what interest does InvestorsHub have in creating a safe haven for secret messages about stocks . . . or anything else? I hope and assume that the answer is "none."

It's an option that I do not care to loose. Not every part of someones life needs to be plastered up on a billboard for all to see.

If a site that is devoted to a heavily regulated and oft-manipulated industry is going to have a rule, shouldn't the rule favor openness and transparency, or AT LEAST allow it?

It should and it does on a public board.
There you go again confusing clarity and disingenuous transfer with private messaging. Could it be that maybe you need to find a whole new group of folks to talk too?
Just because there isn't someone out to get you, doesn't mean that there isn't someone out to get you.
Maybe you should just ask Meatloaf if he could just add a function to disable PM's being sent to you altogether from anyone, then you wouldn't have a problem with it.
