You know what

Great question, back in Sep-Dec 2009 they stated there were going to re-tool as in your post. But fallowing that PR was the PR stating they would conserve cash and finish 2009 with cash vs production of TC’s in this difficult market.

Now comes the PR about the STB….. I’m guessing like most here I'm wondering the direction. I’m also wondering about the PR that will have the word “Contract or Sales” in it. This STB has really got me curious.

I’ve been just sitting on the sidelines watching at this point, not much to say that has not already been said.

With the OBI (Open Internet Broadcasting) identification this could be interesting. I know that reliable user identification has been an issue in the past. Anyone know if other company’s have overcome this issue?

Now they have a partnership with CSI but I think it’s done. I don’t think CSI is going to sell it
Our Set Top Box joint venture with CSI Digital, which provided for $1.5 MM for specialized IPTV related development, is expected to be completed soon. The technology is fully completed and has been incorporated in our STB. We have been working with a third party to provide Middleware, which is the graphical interface for the device. That phase of the project is now nearing completion. Once complete the revenue as well as associated costs will be recognized on the financial statements. The JV agreement allows CSI "favored nation" pricing to the finished product allowing them to sell to their customers. AKYI can also market the STB as the Intellectual Property remains with the company.

Reason why I don’t think they are going to sell it:
BTW worst PR ever:

We have worked very hard the last three years to design, develop and manufacture new products in both the consumer electronics space and the IPTV space. The Set Top Box and its encryption are completed, now we have to sell it. Large TV manufacturers, production and postproduction movie facilities as well as content providers have expressed a high degree of interest. Frankly, if our current partners cannot or will not sell the product then we will focus our efforts on developing new channels of distribution.

More Info for anyone that missed it about STB:

he Company has engaged an outside Consultant who has over 15 years experience dealing with the major studios and manufacturers (as well as peripherals) and has relationships with technical management at these same studios. He will assist in the following initiatives: to interest major consumer electronics manufacturers in AKYI technologies for applications in computers, gaming systems and next generation television sets, and to promote the use of AKYI conditional access technology to content distributors for the secure distribution of high-value content over the internet. It is obvious even to the casual observer that having control over the high value content built directly into the consumer electronics hardware (TVs, computers, etc.) will give that manufacturer a leg up over the competition when it comes to starting their own digital backbone for content distribution. Cutting edge technology for tomorrow's demands today.
Bruce Palmer, AccessKey IP's President, stated, "Later this year, a number of next generation television sets will hit the market from major manufacturers like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and others that will be Internet capable. To fully exploit the potential of these new products through Open Internet Broadcasting (OIB), content distribution must be absolutely secure. Our AccessKey technology will enable this by providing an inexpensive 'spoof proof' security solution for content distribution, thus enabling new revenue streams through secure high-value content distribution over broadband. In addition, this technology will also find important applications in content creation by providing secure transport and handling of production dailies and pre-release content.
We will be conducting practical technology demonstrations in follow-up and initial meetings with a number of leading post production companies and studios in the coming months to further determine potential in this area. Palmer continued to say, "We're excited about these new initiatives and look forward to establishing meaningful working relationships with both content creators and consumer electronics manufacturers. These relationships should firmly establish AKYI as an important player in the exploding IPTV industry. We are excited to see the interest that they are taking in our technology and will be working closely with them to provide solutions that work for them."
