BANKER - I believe that laser technology has advanced to the extent that it could be used to detonate the mines, thus minimizing the potential for additional unexploded ordinance and the effect that exploding ordinance in addition to the mine explosion would have on the surrounding terrain.

See the following 2004 article "Laser Burrows Into The Earth To Destroy Land Mines" A quote from the article: Deminers will soon have a better approach: a compact tool that rapidly uncovers and neutralizes land mines from a safe distance by using extremely powerful pulses of laser light. So Mineseeker technology locates them, and Deminers technology eliminates them. Makes sense to me.
