You both are right!

JCanada was correct with his explanations, logging is (almost always) done coming up. You can log down, but the tool string has a tendency to get stuck. You can't push but you can pull. Tools such as gamma ray and neutron don't need to touch the borehole walls to get a reading so they sort of work going down and you can generally tell about gas and formation thickness. The curves you see going down are not on depth with each other, so it can be a little tricky doing interpretation.
