I get some really good beans from local-based specialty roasters, the best being aribica/Peruvian/free-trade but my mainstay is the 8 'O clock brand columbian, best bang for the buck. Just about any coffee is best when you grind it as you make it. I've got a kitchen aid grinder that is from a 1930'ish design...burr grinders being the best, blade grinders can "burn" the coffee if you aren't careful.
