News from last year but could this still be relative to Sympowerco?

SymPowerco Develops Military Specifications

SymPowerco Corporation’s CEO John Davenport today announces the company’s plans to develop broad-based Hybrid Power System specifications that address various Military wearable, portable and mobile applications. The specifications are being made at the request and with the support of SymPowerco’s hybrid power system partner, Hybrid Energy Technologies Inc. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in conjunction with a procurement contractor in the USA with extensive military procurement experience.

In a recent US Department of Defense competition, the Wearable Power Prize competition, Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) hybrid power systems won the first and third prizes, first prize being $1,000,000. The competition involved wearable power systems designed to provide 20 watts of electrical power for 96 hours, weighed less than 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds) and could be attached to a standard military vest. As long as the DMFC is refueled with methanol it will continue to produce electricity. DMFCs operate with no noise and with a very small heat signature.

The DMFC contest entrants were all of the PEM-based (proton exchange membrane) design. The PEM is an ion specific membrane located between a fuel cell’s electrodes that is very expensive, causes high resistance between the electrodes and allows methanol “crossover” between the electrodes.

SymPowerco believes that its Flowing Electrolyte Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (FEDMFC) technology offers significant advantages over the solid PEM-based DMFC. The FEDMFC offers positive control of methanol crossover, higher power output, greater efficiency, lower cost and offers better cold weather operation when compared to the PEM-based DMFC.

SymPowerco Corporation develops advanced fuel cell and power delivery systems for the rapidly growing personal transportation and portable power system markets being created by today’s energy and environmental challenges.
