Rebuilding forest and building pride in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone needs to earn every penny possible from looking after its forests, as the more valuable each tree is standing, the more likely it is to be left as part of the forest. Income from looking after existing forest can be used to provide the funds to manage damaged woodland so it can recover, and to plant more trees. In this way, the forests will get more valuable over time.

Where possible, produce such as fruit and leaves used for thatch will be gathered in a careful way so that the forest is not damaged. This will allow locals to make a regular part of their living from standing forest. In reforested areas once the trees mature, a few will be cut down each year to provide timber, while the rest carry on growing and earning Carbon Credits. We will ensure that for each tree cut, that there are others which will take its place.

Rebuilding the rainforest canopy for carbon capture and bio-diversity

Many forestry projects use only a single type of tree. Access believes that this does not make a forest, and so in areas which we plant, we will use a wide variety of local trees, so giving the right conditions for many types of plants and animals to thrive in the forest. We will also encourage the planting of some cash crops into the forest such as fruit and nut trees, and other edible crops that grow under the forest canopy.

Access will use Satellite photography and on the ground investigation to check regularly on the health of the forest, and will do everything possible to ensure that the forest as a whole remains healthy. So that local people will support our efforts, we will do our best to help them with things like efficient stoves that burn less fuel. In this way, there will be less pressure to take wood from the forest. If people see a steady improvement in their lives, and have their basic needs met, they are less likely to damage the forest or to tolerate anyone else doing so.
