Some people prefer not to be acknowledged by the hororary title.
My father was a Doctor. He was not only certified as GP, but was head of the Nephrology Department at Jefferson Medical University. He was also a founder of Sigma Chi the science society that publishes American Scientist. Throughout his lifetime he preferred to be called Larry, and never used his title.
John may be the same. Ask him.
