The reason is because the Tivo boxes allow you to control the quality of your recordings. So my model can record up to 40 hours of programming...but at the LOWEST quality level. If I recorded at the highest level, that would only give me about 11 hours of recording.
Like I said, I really like that new DVD model because you can burn your Tivo recordings on to DVD. My wife now tapes some stuff onto tapes to send to her sister in Germany, and it's kind of a pain in the butt. With this new DVD model, it would be soooooo simple!
Anyway, I think you would still need to pay the $12.95/month for the service no matter which box you chose. But if you got another Tivo box for a different room, that would only cost an additional $5.95 (I think).
From what I've heard, you actually don't need to subscribe to the service for the Tivo box to work. You can just program the shows manually. But the service makes life so much better it's very well worth it, imo.
