My father was chairman of the school board. He took me along to meetings when the public was invited. He would listen to all sides and tell the folks what we could afford and what we could not afford. He said he and the board would use ideas presented to set priorities. We did not have lefties in those days but we did have ass holes. I remember when one tried to insult him to take over the meeting. He just adjorned the meeting and left. I asked him why he did not fight the bastard. His reply was that if you wrestle with pigs you both get dirty. It took me a while to realize how this uneducated man had more common sense than I ever hoped to have. He did not have to go to Harvard to develop the quality of his character. But he did go to church and I think he learned something there.
