Home Depot/ Lowes
This all sounds great contating these guys but I must advise that it's important that Whit can supply them before getting too deep in this.
I know from personal experience dealing with nationwide retailers. There first question is ALWAYS "Can you supply all X thousand stores?" if you hesitate for a nano-second they will pretty much laugh at you, give you a pat on the head and send you on your way. They don't even care what the product is initially. If you can't supply product to ALL stores then they want nothing to do with you. And I already know what many of you are thinking...we can just get it into one store (or a few stores) first, right? WRONG! They don't operate like that. It's an all or nothing thing. No testing out in one store or anything like that. All of their inventory is in a master database and they don't allow a few stores in one location to carry something new. It just doesn't work like that.
So my question to you guys is...Are you sure Whit can supply ALL Home Depots and/or ALL Lowes? if the answer is no, then your efforts need to be focussed elsewhere. I would start locally and branch out. The biggest retailer I would go after would be Tractor Supply but even with them gotta make sure Whit can supply ALL of them nationwide. This all needs to be coordinated with a salesperson. perhaps one of you guys can get thru to Whit and run some ideas by him first before doing anything. I think that would be wise. And then maybe you can join forces with an Agrium sales guy and let them make the sale. If you try to go at this on your own...especially if you guys have no sales skills...it is likely to backfire. No purchasing agent is going to act on an email from a shareholder and place a multi-million dollar order. It just doesn't work like that. Trust me. These guys are bombarded on a daily basis and next to impossible to even get thru to. You need an authorization number just to send them a sample of something or else it goes right in the trash. And good luck getting that authorization from them. I tried to get approval to send Tractor Supply a sample product for horses and dogs. After about a month I gave up.
I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just telling ya how it is. It ain't easy and it definitely requires a pro salesman...something I am not.
