Wal-Mart Adds Another California Solar Installation, Largest to Date...

by Adam Sewall in Tuesday, January 19th 2010

Judging from news coming out of California, the world’s largest retailer is continuing to notch up solar energy successes. Two weeks ago, we reported on Wal-Mart’s completion of three new Caliofrnia solar installations in Paramount, Baldwin Park and Highland. Today, via the Los Angeles Times, comes news of a fourth project, brought online this week at the company’s distribution center in Apple Valley.

Comprised of more than 5,300 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and covering nearly seven acres, Wal-Mart’s latest installation has a generation capacity of one megawatt — the equivalent amount needed to power about 175 homes. The Apple Valley solar project is the company’s largest to date.

Since announcing its solar initiative in May 2007, Wal-Mart has been adding solar installations to its retail locations and operations facilities. Last year, for example, Wal-Mart Puerto Rico broke ground on a 895-kilowatt system in Caguas, PR. The solar initiative was updated in 2009, calling for 10 to 20 solar projects to be completed in California over 18 months.
