What is Nanotechnology?

The diameter of an atom is about 0.15 nm. The diameter of an olive oil molecule is about 2 nm. In homogeneous fluid, the critical nucleus size corresponds to the volume of 10-100 atoms, e.g. to 1.5-15 nm (Insepov Z, Bazhirov T, Norman G, Stegailov V (2007) Computer simulation of bubble formation. Joint International Topical Meeting on Mathematics & Computation and Supercomputing in Nuclear Applications (M&C + SNA 2007), Monterey, CA, USA, April 15-19, 2007).

The term "nano cavitation" means that in some cases the cavitation nucleus size is less than 1 micron, that the developed technology allows to both synthesize and modify nanoparticles and produces dispersions and emulsions composed of the submicron-sized particles. In addition, coating inner parts of our cavitation generators with the nanoparticles that are surface-modified with the catalytically active compounds is underway.

If the multistage cavitation generator, the repeated bubble implosion is accompanied by the successive elevation in both pressure and temperature, generation of local jet streams, shock waves, vigorous shearing forces, emission of ultraviolet and/or visible light, which may induce photochemical reactions. As a result, a significant amount of energy is released, which activates atoms, molecules and radicals located within the cavities and those in the surrounding fluid, and initiates chemical reactions and processes and/or dissipates into the surrounding as heat.

The term ‘nanotechnology' encompasses a huge range of activities. 'Nano' is used in the world of science to mean one billionth. E.g. a nanometer is a billionth of a metre. A nanometer is only ten atoms across! So generally nanotechnology is used to mean technology at the nanometer level. Nanotechnology attempts to achieve something useful through the manipulation of matter at this level.

Molecular nanotechnology (MNT), applies to building organic and inorganic structures atom-by-atom, or molecule-by-molecule. Here we are using the forces of nature to assemble nanostructures.
