There is a need to classify people. Left and right may be nebulous concepts, but at least they can be descriptive. Left means a reliance on government at the expense of the individual, right may be on the other side of that out here in the world, but once they get elected to congress it morphs into meaning that they would grow government a bit slower.

The important differential between left and right is the mass of the electorate that put them in power. While these constituencies may believe things the office holder does not, the next election always looms large. For instance, if Brown defeats Coakley, does anybody believe that Olympia Snowe will vote with the left on health care? Not unless Obama can buy her with the promise of some dream job after the angry Mainers turn her out of office.

Right and left have quite a bit of utility therefore. People like you are rare Sherm, lurching violently from left to right - a rabid liberal arch conservative like yourself has no constituency - there will never be a politician elected you can agree with. Elections need majorities, a least common denominator, so even if they believe nothing, the need to be reelected requires the congresscritter to (at least) pretend to be on one side or the other of the left/right divide.
