China To Invest CNY90 Billion For Waste Water Treatment
December 4, 2009
China says that, over the next two to three years, it will invest more than CNY90 billion on waste water treatment to ensure drinking water safety.
Wu Xiaoqing, the vice minister of China's Ministry of Environmental Protection, stated at a recent conference that China had made dramatic achievements in waste water treatment in the past three decades, but the quality of water in the country's major water sources is still unsatisfactory. Wu said that the Chinese government would arrange funds of over CNY90 billion in the next two to three years for the construction of waste water disposal systems and to ensure that drinking water is safe.

According to Wu, about 270 million people in rural China do not have access to safe drinking water. Wu pointed out that the water industry still needs to do more to conserve and recycle water resources, and the country's industrial water use could be greatly reduced provided more efforts can be made on recycling water.
