Playboy’s reputation goes down to the wire

STEPHEN LUMB was livid about Prufrock’s reports questioning the authenticity of his rich playboy image — but it hasn’t stopped allegations that the flashy chairman of St James Capital Holdings is not great with his finances. Last week I was told Allied Irish Banks (AIB) and Knight Frank had had problems with him too. Lumb, who told me he was “controversial and difficult, but charming too”, was keen to clarify.

“Yes, I had accounts with AIB,” he said. “I was using them for a lot of foreign transactions. Then there was a change in management at the Berkeley Square branch. They asked me to move my money to another bank within 30 days. I said it wasn’t convenient but I’d do it in 60 days. Which I did. We talk to Knight Frank about property deals, but I don’t owe them money.”

Okay. How about the allegations from Red Snapper, the party organiser, and TD Waterhouse, the broker, that he owed them thousands of pounds? Lumb admitted lawyers acting for the brokers had called at his Mayfair penthouse to demand £11,000, but said it was in hand. “I decided to wire Red Snapper the £8,000 cash on Thursday,” he said. “But I don’t know why I owe the brokers — if I do, I will wire it to them on Monday. It would take me 20 seconds.” Who’s timing?
