about Ankiel. Since you are a Cards fan, I will recall another lefty who once had the same kind of control issues. Threw hard, but nobody knew whether the next pitch would hit the catcher's mitt or the top of the backstop. After two years, his first contractual obligation up, he was ready to walk away. He got talked back. Still, four more years later, after six big league seasons he was 36-40 with a 4.10 ERA and was walking batters at a rate of 5.3 per 9 innings. But the next year, with the help of his catcher, he finally found some control.
That fella's name was Koufax. I seem to recall he wound up having a pretty decent career.
