They would short to protect an already large short position that they took on the initial run-up. They could have entered the short position knowing that some of the former equus holders were going to sell several million shares, and they wanted to ride the downtrend, not realizing that this is the real deal until it was too late. If they did that, they're playing with fire and deserve to get burned.
