WA: Air operations resume on Deer Point fire

The Associated Press
7/27/02 7:11 PM

MANSON, Wash. (AP) -- Air operations resumed Saturday after gusty morning winds suspended flights over a 34,570-acre fire burning along the north shore of Lake Chelan.

Firefighters also continued bulldozing firelines along Cooper Ridge, on the eastern end of the Sawtooths and the northern reaches of the fire, near the Chelan-Okanogan county line, said fire information officer Steve Butterworth.

Butterworth said winds peaked overnight at around 40 mph on the ridges. But no structures were threatened, and no serious injuries were reported among the 1,183 people working on the Deer Point fire Saturday.

Winds had died down by early afternoon, making it safe to resume air operations. Ten helicopters were available to dump water on any flare-ups, Butterworth said.

The fire was 37 percent contained, with 19 miles of fireline still to be cleared around the perimeter.

On Friday, residents of about 75 houses north of Manson were allowed to return home after wind-tested firelines held along the eastern flank of the fire, which spread from an abandoned campfire July 15.

Campfire bans remainded in effect for most of the Chelan Ranger District of the Wenatchee National Forest.
