SBC Reaction to NCSL Telecom Resolution

DENVER, Jul 27, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Following is a response by SBC Communications (NYSE:SBC) to the telecommunications resolution passed by the National Conference of State Legislatures today at their annual meeting. Please attribute to SBC President William Daley.
Consumers will be the big winners of a fair and level playing field in rolling out advanced services, like high-speed broadband technology, where all providers are treated the same. We applaud state legislative leaders for taking the initiative in helping bring the benefits of robust broadband competition to consumers.

This is a terrific, forward-looking initiative. It shows the momentum behind improving the rules governing telecommunications. Congress can act immediately on this by passing the Breaux-Nickels bill. If Congress accepts the challenge, as Oklahoma recently did, they'll find they can help invigorate the consumer broadband marketplace, usher in increased investment and innovation, and bring greater choice and convenience for consumers.
