Nah. If your new to algae it's not a stupid question.

On the other hand if you have been hanging around algae for numerous months now asking the same questions over and over then it becomes stupid. I think everyone knows where I'm going with this one.

Natural occurring algae is susceptible to a plethora of detrimental contaminants and problems. Reducing its value significantly.

That is why a closed loop system is the solution.
