Yeah he was. But he at least took his best shot. For the first two, his stance was reasonable. No one was expecting Prescott to have as many stages as it did. Given the extra transistors, it was reasonable to expect Intel to boost IPC, given that Northwood was a little light on execution resources. And then when it was known that Prescott had as many stages as it did, and managed to have close to the same IPC as Northwood for what it is worth, it was reasonable to expect it to scale. It didn't, but that wasn't the way to bet.

As far as the K8, remember that it sampled at 900MHz and was introduced at 1.4GHz. The fact that AMD was able to push it all the way to 2.6GHz in the same process was an amazing feat...
